Planning your first TG event

A HostGrrrl is someone who announces an idea for an event, watches out for newcomers, and ensures that everyone feels welcome.  It's the single most important feature that has made TriangleGrrrls successful.

Volunteering to be HostGrrrl is a lot easier than it might seem.  Some ShyGrrls have even found it to be great shyness therapy!  One thing is for certain - hosting is a great way to meet great Grrrls with similar interests.  Here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Take charge.  Decide on an event, venue, date, and time before posting to the Message Board.  Resist the temptation to post a "would anyone attend if we did an XYZ event?" message.  The responses one might get to such generic posts tend to be highly unreliable, due to lack of specific details.  The answer is YES, people will attend!  The majority of Grrrls simply will not respond to you until you take the lead with complete information about your event.
  2. Address fear in your event post to help attendees set aside their shyness to come out to your event.  Veteran hostgrrrls have seen many emails from potential attendees with concern about whether they will fit in to your group.  They wonder if they will be too young, too old, too single, too coupled, too new - you name it!  If you can find a way to place some assurance into your post, you will be rewarded with a great turnout.
  3. Be inclusive.  TriangleGrrrls was founded on the idea of clique-free socializing.  You can target people you'd like to meet while still being inclusive.  For example, we have had socials for women over 50 and admirers.  We've also had gatherings for women of color and those who love them.  By adding these words, you welcome people who will likely contribute greatly to the kind of energy you are looking for, while still zooming in on your target audience.
  4. Post at least a couple weeks in advance for better turnout.  This is not always possible, and if you feel like posting an event at the last minute in the hopes that a person or two will join you, that's fine too.
  5. Post your event to the Events And Planning board on the Forum.   Be sure to follow posting guidelines located at the top of the Events and Planning board.  They will guide you in include linking to the TG calendar and including all relevant details.
  6. Arrive at your event early.
  7. Some HostGrrrls like to use nametags rather than make introductions.  That's up to you!
  8. Have a great time!   Lather, rinse, repeat.
